These People Are Crazy (Valkenburg, Netherlands)

Stellplatz: Stadscamping Den Driesch

Before I tell you about our day's adventures, let me just rave about how awesome our Stellplatz for tonight is. We are perched on top of a hill, just below the ruins of the Valkenburg Castle overlooking the land below us. The site is clean, well maintained and the people are friendly! The best spot so far :-)

What a Spot!

Well, we have finally left Germany behind us and are now headed for Belgium. But on the way we hadd to visit Valkenburg in the Netherlands as we'd heard of their caves via Timm's Uncle.

Uncle Hans - thanks for sending us this way. Not only are the caves great but I love Valkenburg in general! It's sandwiched between Germany and Belgium in an area called Limburg, has a lovely vibe to it and is pretty!

So onto the caves - the "Gemeenskap Grotte" are a system of man-made caves and passages spanning 70km / 110 hectares underground and were used for various purposes over the hundreds of years. Last use (1975) was as an atomic bunker for 15 000 people... The temperature inside is a stable 12 degrees, very different to the 35 degrees we are currently experiencing on the outside :-(

Aboard the electric train, ready for our Tour

The Toilet / Sanitary Facilities built for the "Atomic Bunker"

Not a great picture but at the back you can see the bunk beds....

Throughout the caves there are pictures painted directly onto the limestone

Multimedia show at the end

The cave has got 5 underground lakes which provide a freshwater supply - this is one of them

Well, once the caves were viewed, up the mountain we went again (incl our shopping) to fetch the costumes. At this point let me just mention how much we are appreciating / enjoying our e-bikes. Without them we would be missing out on so much enjoyment.... Especially climbing these hills ;-)

The rest of the day was spent in the local public pool and it's still so warm that I'm sitting here in my Bikini at 8pm, typing up the blog and answering emails.
